Runners are now registering for the Joe English Twilight Challenge to be
held at Amherst’s Freestyle Farm on October 1st 2022. This unusual and challenging race continues into its eighth year for runners or hikers—casual or ultra-level—who compete and endure from 2.62 to 30+ miles over the evening. In the spirit of Joe English himself, a celebrated native American
who ran these hills in the 1600s, the route travels over woodland trails,
across streams, and over fields featuring the best of New England's beautiful fall countryside.
The event starts at sunset and runs for 6 hours into the night. People of all ages test themselves solo or in team “ultra,” half-marathon, and full marathon footraces. Held on a 2.62-mile course, participants run by headlamp and moonlight as they circle a hilltop pond and travel through dark woods on groomed horse trails marked with fluorescent light sticks, ground flags and strategically placed bonfires. This event is the sole annual fundraiser to benefit the Amherst Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) corporation staffed by volunteers.
The Race director is trustee George Bower, a lifelong runner, veteran coach and event organizer, who has operated races for over 20 years. For more information and to register to participate:
