The Town of Mont Vernon and Amherst Land Trust are working together to protect 248 acres of land in the Purgatory Brook
Watershed, which were scheduled
to go up for auction in July 2007
The Amherst Land Trust is collaborating with the Town of Mont Vernon in an effort to acquire and protect 248 acres of land known
as the Wah Lum (“Glorious Forest”) Reserve in the Purgatory Brook Watershed. Combined with existing open land, this acquisition
would create a uniquely scenic conservation area of close to 500 contiguous acres for public recreational use.
The property had been scheduled for auction in July, 2007, but was conditionally acquired by the Town of Mont Vernon
using $100,000 from its Conservation Fund, augmented by a 2-year loan from the Land Trust. To repay the loan and assume
ownership of the tract, Mont Vernon must raise $441,799 by March of 2008 (or $485,396 to include interest due by March of 2009).
The Land Trust will hold a conservation easement to ensure permanent protection.
Public-private financial support is critically needed to help meet these commitments, and you are urged to please consider a
generous cash donation! Make your check payable to “The Town of Mont Vernon Wah Lum Reserve” and forward it to the
Mont Vernon Conservation Commission, P. O. Box 444, Mont Vernon Town Hall, Mont Vernon, NH 03057. Donations are
tax-deductible under IRS Publication 526 provisions.
Tax-exempt donations can also be made through the Amherst Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. In this case,
make the check payable to “Wah Lum Reserve c/o Amherst Land Trust” and forward it to the above address or directly to the
Amherst Land Trust, P.O. Box 735, Amherst, NH 03031.
